The Ashes 2009 - Cariff
The Ashes is coming to Cardiff, Wales!
In July 2009 Ashes history will be made when England play Australia in a Test match for the first time in Wales.
Preparations have been taking place in Cardiff for three years after it gained the right to hold a match in the famous series over more established English venues such as Old Trafford in Lancashire. The match will run from July 8th – 12th 2009.
So what does the Swalec Stadium and Cardiff have to offer the thousands of England cricket fans, and Australian supporters?
The Swalec Stadium, which used to be known as Sophia Gardens, is the home of Glamorgan Cricket Club and a rapid development has ensured it has all the trappings of a true Test venue – large stands with a 16,000 capacity and a state-of-the-art media centre and pavilion.
Legendary Aussie leg spinner Shane Warne recently said it was “a disgrace” that Cardiff was hosting the first Test because traditionally that honour in an English Ashes series goes to Lords. It may be a break with tradition but the vibrant Welsh capital is well used to coping for sports fans, having hosted Six Nations rugby matches and English FA Cup Finals.
One of the great advantages of holding a Test in Cardiff is that the venue is within a 10 minute walk of the city centre and a number of top hotels such as the Marriott, the Hilton, Jurys, the Park Plaza, Novotel, the Thistle, Macdonald House, as well as Rocco Forte St David’s Hotel and Spa.
For the evening there are dozens of bars and restaurants in the city centre, or down at Cardiff Bay a short taxi ride away.
Last time the Ashes was played Simon Jones, a Welsh fast bowler, played a major role in England’s triumph – and when the first ball is bowled at the Swalec Stadium on July 8th it will be a proud day for Wales.
